New opportunities and Ideas



This week the Basketball games were canceled due to the long holiday weekend, but that did not stop progress.  On Friday I came up with the idea to do some clinics with some of the kids in the school’s heart-heart program.  Unluckily the man who runs the program was off coaching at the state wrestling meet, which our wrestlers did quite well at, so when I see him Monday I will talk to him about getting the contact information for the parents of the kids in the program.   This week I also got to attend a great event held by Bet Buddies of Tennessee.  Best Buddies is a worldwide program which pairs kids with special needs with a buddy who hangs out and just becomes friends with the people.  I attended the annual prom with my school.  The prom was held at the Bridgestone Arena, so it is a very big deal.  I saw many of the kids who I had played basketball with.  This was another great experience where people with disabilities and other people just come together in order to have a good time just like anyone else would.  I hope what I am doing can be as fun and influential as what the people at Best Buddies are doing.     Nice, you found a couple resources. You can accomplish a lot more with Best Buddies, so your project comes more complete. With your project more complete, your life will be easier. Keep using these resources to your advantage, and your life will be easy. Good work!

    Harrison, I like how you are comparing your project to something bigger and desiring to make it go towards that goal. What would you want to add to your project to become more influential to the community and the world in general?

    It's great that you found a way to work around the holidays, Harrison. It's also cool that you could possibly grow to the same level as Best Buddies, keep it up and I'm sure that could happen.

First games

Yesterday was a complete success.  Yesterday I participated in coaching our first game.  The team I worked with consisted of 5 players including my older sister.  We played one 30 minute game.  The game was much different than any other competitive sport I have been apart of.  Both teams were very supportive of each other.  Any time someone scored both teams would cheer.  No one was focused on the score of the game, and even now writing this I could not tell you the score. I do not know the score because it did not matter to anyone.  all the players and their families were just happy to be out playing and having a good time.  Many of the kids who struggled to move or focus had their parents or a friend with them helping them to play.  This was a real eye opening experience that changed how I look at what sports can mean to people.  Throughout the entire game the players from each team were giving out high fives, fist bumps, and chee...

Goals and Progress Tracking

Hello my name is Harrison. I am starting basketball clinics for kids who have disabilities which prevent them from being able to participate in other sports.  My goals for these clinics are to give opportunities to kids who are often left out of sports or other activities a group in which they can take part in a fun active sport.  I hope to promote to the kids the fun of being apart of a team as well as instilling a value of being active.  I plan to track my progress by creating videos with the kids taking part in the different games and drills then eventually putting all the videos together to share one big compilation displaying all the progress made by the kids in the clinics.  Another way I will be tracking the progress of the clinics is through the different drills we will cover each week.  We will work to understand the basic skills in basketball that will help to eventually be used in games that we will be playing by the end of the clinics. How I am Learning

This week I met with a close family friend who has done some extensive work in the field of adapted sports.  My friend worked at the U.S. Paralympics facility where she learned the different ways people with limited abilities are able to compete in athletics.  She taught me how her and her colleagues come up with activities for people with physical disabilities.  The most important thing I learned from my friend is that with limited mobility people cannot compete the same as others, so instead of trying to push through the problems that might arise you can try to find new ways to go around them. I think that this will help me in the future by allowing me to understand the difficulties the children are facing and allow me to help them create a new way to overcome them.  In the future I think that this experience will help me understand how to confidently face problems and find different creative solutions to problems.  Thank you for reading!
